Genius of Bach
Brandenburg 5 & Goldberg Variations
September 28 – October 1, 2023

Baroque cellist René Schiffer, praised for his “interpretive imagination and patrician command of the cello” (Cleveland Plain Dealer), joins Three Notch’d Road for two famous masterpieces of J.S. Bach: the Goldberg Variations arranged for string ensemble, and the fifth Brandenburg Concerto featuring David Ross on baroque flute, Fiona Hughes on baroque violin, and harpsichordist Jennifer Streeter. This instrumental concert opens our thirteenth season, themed “Masterpiece” as each of our four programs will feature a famous work of early music.

SACRED HARP
English, Irish & American Christmas
December 1-3, 2023

For Christmas, Three Notch’d Road returns to our specialty: early American hymnody and its roots in the Old World, featuring soprano Sheila Dietrich, lutenist Cameron Welke, and founding member Anne Timberlake (recorders). As we did for our most recent album Shining Shore (released in 2022 to international acclaim), this program will interweave English and American folk and sacred music to celebrate the season, with an added Irish twist! This program’s featured masterpiece is The Sacred Harp (1844), an American shape note source developed from English 18th century rural church music.

Clarinet Quintet
Mozart’s Viennese Heritage
January 26-28, 2024

Celebrating Mozart’s Birthday weekend, Three Notch’d Road will feature one of his great masterpieces: the Clarinet Quintet, K.581 (1789). The program will also include other works of Viennese origin and a string quartet by Josef Haydn, played on Classical period instruments with gut strings and transitional bows of a design just prior to modern instruments. Violinist Aisslinn Nosky (reviewed by the San Diego Union-Tribune: “Nosky offered Haydn at his most virile, most persuasive, but also his most playful…”) is featured along with historical clarinetist Dominic Giardino.

Polyhymnia
Praetorius for Easter
April 27-28, 2024

Three Notch’d Road performs selections from the Polyhymnia, Caduceatrix, et Panegyrica, Michael Praetorius’ magnum opus published in 1615, at the very beginning of the Baroque era. Fusing the ornate innovations of Italian Catholics like Giovanni Gabrielli with the simplicity and singability of the German Lutheran chorale, Praetorius masterfully creates an immersive, interactive musical experience unlike any other. Featuring liturgical works appropriate to Eastertide, and led by guest artistic program director Jeremy Ward, the consort of instruments (violin, viola, sackbutt, cello, organ) will answer a consort of voices: soprano Sheila Dietrich, countertenor Nathan Medley, tenor Ben Geier, and bass Peter Walker.
